February is the month when you see hearts and the word “love” everywhere. I decided it was the perfect time to post a blog about how love can fail you. Everyone has heard the verse from 1 Corinthians about how love never fails. We often see the NIV version “Love never fails” 1 Corinthians 13:8 on all kinds of different items.
The verses that precede 1 Corinthians 13:8 state characteristics of love: patient, kind, it is not arrogant or rude, it does not insist in its own way, it is not irritable or resentful, it does not rejoice at wrongdoings, but rejoices in truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things.
I suppose we can all interpret this differently, but the characteristics mentioned before love never failing are the reasons why love does not fail. We are all human, and no matter how much we love someone, we will at times fail them.
Earthly love will always fail us when we are viewing it in a selfish way. Earthly love will always fail us when we expect others to give us the grace we do not deserve, but in return do not provide the grace that others deserve.
Earthly love will always fail us when we do not learn from our mistakes and try to improve.
Earthly love will always fail us when we are looking for that to satisfy our soul in a way only Jesus can.
There is no earthly love that can completely satisfy your soul.
This Valentine’s Day, do not focus on what you get or do not get, do not focus on if you are single or not.
This Valentine’s Day, read all of 1 Corinthians 13 and see what love is really all about.
The only love that will never fail you is the love of Jesus.
The only love that will ever satisfy you is the love of Jesus.
Jesus loves us unconditionally and extends us a grace we do not deserve.
Let today be the day we learn to love a little more like Jesus.
